Building Bridges through Teacher Training

Thirteen teachers across seven of our Building Bridges schools took part in the NOW (Neurodevelopment of Words Programme) refresher earlier this month. This training is a key part of the wider “Building Bridges from Learning to Success” programme, which helps children achieve the critical milestone of learning to read by age eight. Participating schools included:

  • Cocorite Government
  • Belmont Boys RC
  • Patna River Estate Government
  • St. David’s RC
  • Patience Hill Government (Tobago)
  • Mt. D’Or Government
  • Nelson Street Boys RC

This refresher ensured that teachers are better equipped to support students’ literacy and long-term learning success.

Supporting Community Residences

UWTT extends gratitude to Woodside Energy for their generous donation of eight dozen bed sheets. These were distributed to four homes — Sophia House, Rainbow Rescue, Raffa House, and Casa de Corazon — directly benefiting 50 children in residential care.

Fostering Music Education

In collaboration with MIC-IT, UWTT supported St. David’s RC Primary School in enhancing its music programme. The school received a set of steelpan instruments on loan, allowing students to develop their musical talents and creativity. MIC-IT has also committed to providing a volunteer music instructor, ensuring sustained growth and guidance for the students.

Strategic Session 2025

The UWTT volunteer Board and staff recently held the annual Strategic Session to distil research and chart a course for the year ahead. The session focused on strengthening service delivery and enhancing impact for all stakeholders.

Board members present included:

  • Ian L. Benjamin (Chair)
  • Vincent Pereira (Vice Chair)
  • Karen Darbasie
  • Jean Andre Celestain
  • Karen Yip Chuck
  • Simon Aqui
  • Mitchell De Silva
  • Hazel Douglas
  • Simone Thorne

Their dedication continues to shape a stronger and more effective United Way.
